Morale, Welfare and Recreation Program

Marine Corps Marathon - The AFF served as one of the charity sponsors for the Marine Corps Marathon in October. The event has expanded into the fourth largest marathon in the U.S. - it now attracts over 22,000 participants.

The Armed Forces Foundation offers Service Members and their families an escape from the stress of military deployment, injury, and death through our Morale, Welfare & Recreation Program. Being able to provide moral support and diversionary activities plays a key role in helping injured military members recover and readjust to civilian life.

In 2008, the AFF sponsored over $1 million worth or Morale, Welfare & Recreation Activities. The wide range of events included Welcome Home ceremonies, golf outings, concerts, family outings, ski trips, marathons, and unit Christmas parties.

In September and October of 2008, the AFF teamed up with the Venetian Hotel Resort-Casino in as Vegas for the Salute Our Troops Weekend. The AFF took almost 100 wounded warriors to Las Vegas for a dream Las Vegas weekend. The Service Members were treated to five star accommodations and world class entertainment.

FAST FACTS:

The AFF sponsored over $200,000 on Morale, Welfare & Recognition activities in 2007 alone.

In October of 2008, the AFF once again took place in the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM). The AFF served as one of the charity sponsors; in an event that has expanded into the fourth largest marathon in the U.S., attracting over 22,000 participants.

Another example of an event promoting troop’s morale and welfare was the AFF’s involvement at the Welcome Home Ceremony for Task Force Patriot, in Melrose, Massachusetts. Members of the 1st Squadron, 182nd Cavalry were welcomed home by the AFF after a 15-month deployment in Kosovo. AFF President, Patricia Driscoll, along with Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick thanked members of the 182nd Cavalry with speeches highlighting the unit’s accomplishments and lauding their service to our nation. The AFF also presented the task force with a special Recognition Award for their exemplary efforts in establishing a civil affairs program in remote locations of Kosovo.

The AFF is proud to organize events that improve the morale and welfare of recovering Service Members. While we could never fully thank them for their sacrifices they’ve made, the Morale, Welfare & Recreation Program strives to give something back to our nation’s heroes.
