The Armed Forces Foundation is proud to have partnered with the Soldiers Home Investment Project
committee in order to formulate and enact a plan to renovate the Grant Building on the grounds
of the Armed Forces Retirement Home. The Armed Forces Retirement Home, formerly known as the "U.S.
Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home" is located on property straddling the border between the northeast and
northwest quadrants of the city of Washington, D.C. The Grant Building is a marble-faced dormitory
structure located in the northernmost corner of the property, just south of the intersection of Rock
Creek and Harewood Road, N.W. The building is situation immediately north of a small historic district
which delineates the original, historic core of the home.
The Grant Building is a large, three-story, rectangular shaped building with a central court from the
second through fourth floors. Plans for its erection were debated as early as the late 19th century;
however, it was not until 1906 that construction was actually begun. The work was completed six years
later in 1912. The architects, Baldwin and Pennington of Baltimore, designed the handsome structure
not only to house the members (as the residents of the Home were known), but also to provide a mess hall.
