Soldier's Home Investment Project– The Armed Forces Foundation and the Soldier's Home Investment Project (SHIP) Committee have teamed up to renovate the Grant Building on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home.
The Armed Forces Foundation has proudly partnered with the
Soldiers Home Investment Project committee to formulate and enact a plan
to renovate the Grant Building on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement
Home. The Armed Forces Retirement Home, formerly known as the "U.S.
Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home" is located on property straddling
the border between the northeast and northwest quadrants of Washington,
D.C. Located in the northernmost corner of the property, just south of
the intersection of Rock Creek and Harewood Road, NW, the building is situated
immediately north of the small historic district delineating the original,
historic core of the home.
The Grant Building is a large, three-story, marble-faced building
with a central court from the second through fourth floors. Plans for its
erection were debated as early as the late 19th century; however, construction
did not begin until 1906 and did not finish until 1912. The architects
Baldwin and Pennington of Baltimore designed the handsome structure not
only to house the members (as the residents of the Home were known) but
also to provide a mess hall.
The SHIP committee and the Armed Forces Foundation plan to
renovate the Grant Building, eventually returning it to the residents
of the Armed Forces Retirement Home for residential, rehabilitation
and recreational use. To that end the SHIP committee has agreed to
work closely with the Armed Forces Foundation to raise funds and plan
for the eventual restoration of the Grant Building. All of the suggestions
and plans will meet the current and long-range plans of the current
administration of the Armed Forces Retirement Home.
